I’ve been putting off saying anything about this but I think a lot of you can relate so here it goes…
I’ve been off hormonal birth control for about 2 months. I had Paraguard put in about a month ago.
IT IS LITERALLY THE BEST DAMN DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE ABOUT MY OWN HEALTH.
I’m 21 and I started using HBC at 16 because doctors (psychs and gynos) told me it would “help regulate my moods and my period”. More specifically I had been using seasonique from 18-21, so that my time of month (and worse time of mood swings) were meant to only happen once every three months. Even after being on seasonique for three years, I still would have to stop halfway through the pack and have my period because I was spotting or could feel my body trying to have one.
Since I’ve been off the hormonal birth control EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED
-skin has completely cleared up
-don’t feel the need to food binge
-and most importantly, ZERO FUCKING MOOD SWINGS
-and that underlying undercurrent of anger I have felt for the past six years is GONE.
I really wish I had gotten off hormonal birth control sooner.
I feel like we have been lied to about HBC. That shit is obviously poison and it’s keeping your brain in a hormone haze.
I’ve been through the birth control tag, and for some of you, HBC is claimed to work/be effective/achieve the results I have gotten with non-hormonal BC- and that’s great. It really is. But I would say that the majority of women don’t have irregular hormone levels and thus don’t need another dosing of hormones.
So for those of you with your eyebrow raised concerning how you feel about HBC, I implore you to get off of it for a week or two and see how you feel without that synthetic hormone haze in your brain. That’s where I started.
When I was researching Paraguard online, I found a lot of negative reviews. However, this is biased. Women who are having a bad experience are more likely to reach out and talk about it. While women who have a good experience can get on with their happy lives and not worry about stupid fucking birth control fucking with their day. I’ve been thinking a lot about how unhappy some of you are (aka my mutual follows) and I’ve been wondering what HBC you’re on so I wanted to speak out.
I wish I had found more positive information about Paraguard before I went to have it inserted, so those of you on the fence, here’s your positive info:
I have had zero problems with Paraguard. Insertion sucked but only briefly (<10mins) and then it was over. I bled/had pain for one day after insertion- but it wasn’t so much I had to stay on my couch. I actually went out dancing the night I got it put in. I have never had kids or been pregnant and that’s 100% okay. My gyno said They have been doing more research and IUDs are safe for people without kids, it’s just that the initial funding of research was for women who do have kids, as a long lasting BC would appeal more to those women. I can have this IUD in until 2025. That’s right, for the next 12 years, or until I want it taken out, I don’t have to stress about BC. Also, Paraguard is so effective it starts working immediately and can be used as emergency contraception if put in after unprotected sex (up to 5 days after!) The cost seemed like a lot- however previously I was spending 100$ every 3 months, which would be 4,800$ after 12 years, instead of the 500$ one time up front.
This ended up being way longer than I thought it would be.
Tl;dr- I felt crazy because my brain was in a hormone haze and without the HBC, I don’t feel crazy. If you can relate, Paraguard is another option you have.
